Unified English Braille · uncontracted (grade 1)
Braille practice: free quizzes and worksheets
Practice reading braille by sight: 53 items to read, from single letters to short sentences, each with its answer hidden until you check it. Take a quick braille test in the quiz, or print the worksheet and its answer key for class or home. No sign-up.
Everything here is uncontracted braille (grade 1). Each letter has its own cell, with the capital and numeric indicators and punctuation, and no contractions. That is how most people start reading Unified English Braille (UEB), the code of the US, the UK, Canada and Australia.
Braille quiz
Read the braille and pick its print. Ten questions a round, or as many as the set has; a new round shuffles them again.
Practice sets: read the braille
Read each item, say your answer, then open it to check. Screen readers read each item as its dot numbers.

E. Numbers
A number starts with the numeric indicator, dots 3, 4, 5 and 6. After it, the letters a to j stand for the digits 1 to 0, so 12 is the numeric indicator, then a, then b.

Printable braille worksheet with answer key
The same sets on paper, sections A to F in the same order as this page, with a line under each item to write the answer. Section G turns it around: empty cells to fill in with the dots of 4 words and numbers. The answer key is a separate PDF, so the worksheet can go to the learner on its own.
To print: US Letter at actual size, black and white. On A4, choose Fit in the print dialog. Printing this page instead leaves out the quiz and the answers.
More sheets, including the alphabet chart and flash cards a to z, are on the braille printables page.
How to practice braille reading
- Learn the dot numbers. 1, 2 and 3 go down the left column of the cell, 4, 5 and 6 down the right. Every letter is named by its dots: h is dots 1, 2 and 5.
- One group at a time. Start with a to j. Then k to t, which are the same shapes plus dot 3, then u to z.
- Answer before you look. Say the letter, or write it down, and only then open the answer. A wrong guess you check teaches more than a right answer you peeked at.
- Go back to what you miss. Keep the letters you got wrong for the next session, and mix the sets in the quiz once each one feels easy.
- Then words and sentences. Reading whole words is where the capital and numeric indicators and punctuation start to matter.
Every cell is in the braille alphabet chart. For your own drills, type any word or sentence into the braille translator with Grade 1 selected, and for common words in both grades see braille words.
Frequently asked questions
How can I practice reading braille?
Learn the six dot numbers first, then read one group at a time: the letters a to j, then k to t, then u to z. Say each answer before you open it. Once the letters come easily, move on to words, numbers and short sentences, and take the quiz to mix them up.
Is this braille test grade 1 or grade 2?
Grade 1. Everything on this page and on the worksheet is uncontracted Unified English Braille (UEB): one cell for each letter, plus the capital and numeric indicators and punctuation, with no contractions.
Are the braille worksheets free to print?
Yes. The worksheet (2 pages) and its answer key (1 page) are free PDFs to download, print and photocopy, with no sign-up. They are US Letter; on A4, choose Fit in the print dialog.
Can I practice reading braille by touch with this page?
No. Dots on a screen or printed in ink are flat, so this page trains the eyes to recognize the cells. Braille read by touch has raised dots, made with a braille embosser, a braillewriter or a slate and stylus.
Does the braille quiz work with a screen reader?
Each braille item has its dot numbers as its accessible name, the answers are buttons that work with the keyboard, and the result of each question is announced. The practice sets also work with JavaScript turned off.
